Protesters continue to maintain the encampment on Columbia University campus on April 24 in New York City, after a tense night of negotiations. Caitlin Ochs/ReutersColumbia University said it has extended negotiations with student activists over the dismantling of the pro-Palestinian encampment that has cast its campus into days of turmoil, a spokesperson for the school said. The statement came just hours after Columbia’s president announced it had given protesters a midnight deadline to reach an agreement or the university would consider “alternative options” to clear the encampment. The talks will now be extended another 48 hours after “important progress” was made, the spokesperson said. As the protests stretch into their eighth day, Columbia President Minouche Shafik has faced numerous calls from donors and lawmakers who believe police should be brought in to clear the encampment and restore order on campus – even as students and faculty are condemning the president’s similar decision last week to ask the New York Police Department to clear another student encampment.

Should the Israeli regime commit any military aggression again, Iran's response will assuredly and decisively be stronger and more resolute,” Ambassador Iravani added. Kansas City shooting survivor Jacob Gooch, Sr., who was shot in the ankle, told "CBS Mornings" on Thursday that he overheard an altercation prior to the mass shooting following a parade and rally for the Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday. Gooch told CBS' Gayle King that before gunfire started, he heard a woman tell a presumed shooter, "don’t do it, not here; this is stupid." Gooch said his wife and daughter then saw a gun being drawn. He told CBS his wife was shot in the calf, while Gooch was shot in the ankle and sustained breaks to a few metatarsal bones in his foot. Gooch did not specify his son’s injuries or provide an update on his son’s medical status.

Parts of Southern California are under a tropical storm warning for the first time in history, according to the National Hurricane Center, as Hurricane Hilary barrels toward the area. The tropical storm watch from the California-Mexico border to Point Mugu, California, including Los Angeles and San Diego, has been changed to a tropical storm warning, according to Friday's 11 p.m. ET advisory from the National Hurricane Center. A tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area within 36 hours. Hurricane Hilary weakened to a Category 3 storm Saturday morning with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph, while still retaining its major hurricane status, according to the latest update from the National Hurricane Center.

Ukraine’s National Resistance Center — an official body — claimed Tuesday that the construction of another camp to host Wagner Group fighters has begun in the Zyabrovka Air Base in Belarus. “On the border with Ukraine, in the village of Zyabrovka in the Republic of Belarus, a new camp for 'Wagner' PMC mercenaries is being built,” the center said on its website. Zyabrovka is located near Gomel in southeastern Belarus, about 40 kilometers from the border with Ukraine's Chernihiv region. The camp can house around 1,000 personnel, the center said, and it looks like a tent city. Moscow used Belarusian territory to facilitate its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, strengthening ties between President Vladimir Putin and Lukashenko.
